Theory

The major ninth chord extends the major seventh by adding a major ninth. Abmaj9 uses Ab, C, Eb, G, Bb. The major seventh (G) creates the warm, floating quality of the major seventh chord. Adding the ninth above it opens the chord into an even airier, more spacious sound. The ninth sits a whole step above the major seventh, and the two notes together (major 7th and 9th) create a beautiful, close interval.
